If you want to experience life “as it should be,” to experience the brilliant colors of the sky at dawn, the trickling sounds of the lake lapping the shore, or the wonder of the sun rising out of a crystal clear lake, you’ll feel right at home at the Call of the Loon Cabin at Thompson Lake.

The Call of the Loon cabin is located in the Lakes Region of Maine. Tucked between the Atlantic Ocean and the White Mountains, the Lakes Region of Maine earns its name from the more than 50 lakes scattered among green rolling hills. There are a multitude of activities to enjoy during the fall, winter, spring, and summer.

Maine is a popular destination in the Fall. Leaf peepers flock to the area to get a first hand glimpse of the dramatic color transformation of the fall foliage from green to the brilliant colors of reds to orange to yellow. Foliage normally starts to change in mid to late September. It lasts well into October and typically “peaks” about October 10th. At this time of year vacationers can enjoy views of the foliage from just about anywhere. The vibrant landscape can be particularly enjoyable to look at while taking a scenic hike, riding a mountain bike, exploring the lake by boat, casting for fish, antiquing, apple picking, attending fall festivals, hunting, or just sitting on the deck gazing at the water.

Winter is a particularly fun season in the lakes region of Maine for outdoor enthusiasts. The lakes become the playground of snowmobilers, fishermen, skiers, ATV enthusiasts and lots of others. The Lakes and ponds freeze over and by January are safe for all kinds of activity. Snowmobiles can be seen zipping around. Snow shoers forge a trail along the shore and across the lakes. Cross-country skiers find them a perfect arena for exercise. Skaters make use of the surface for fun. Fishing is also found in abundance. The ice fishing season opens January first and avid fisherman have their small shacks out for warming and cooking while they tend their traps.

Skiing is also a popular winter attraction. Shawnee Peak Ski Resort, Mount Abram ski Resort, and Sunday River Ski Resort are all nearby and all offer fantastic downhill skiing opportunities.

From the first hint of Spring through the end of summer activity on Thompson Lake truly comes alive. This is considered peak season in the lakes region of Maine. Sights commonly seen on Thompson lake include groups of sailboats crisscrossing the lake captained by children learning to sail at one of the two camps on the lake, boats pulling a waterskier or someone out for a joy ride on a tube, canoers and kayakers exploring the shore, vacationers basking in the sun on docks or swim up floats, jetskiers skipping across the water, fisherman trolling the water, loons diving under the water, pontoon boats with groups of people enjoying a tour of the lake, and swimmers diving off of docks.
