A Vacation Rental House in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Va
Sleeping Accommodations: 5 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 14
Bedding Information: 2 Double Beds. One Bedroom. 2 Bunk Beds
Airport: 25 miles (ROA)
In the early 1900's, Elmo Johnson and his wife Freddie lived and raised their family in the house. They planted their first apple tree in 1919. The secluded home is in the middle of 250 acres of orchards, lush pastures, and shady woods. It is located a ½-mile from the nearest dwelling. It is surrounded by the animals that you would expect to find on a self-sufficient farm of that era. Animals include cattle, horses, burros, dogs, cats, pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, rabbits, and turkeys.
From the first blossom of Spring, to creek wading in Summer, to the last crisp apple of Fall, to the snow-covered hills of Winter, there is a time for you to relax or be active. The property boasts 3 ponds for fishing, creeks for wading, "deer" trails for walking and hiking, and wonderful rolling land for cross-country skiing. There are breathtaking views in all directions for viewing or photographing.
The home is 8 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and 7 miles from The National D-Day Memorial. On the farm is Peaks of Otter Winery which makes "Fruit of the Farm Wine." Nearby you can find fast food and gourmet restaurants.
The rambling 19th-Century farmhouse is furnished as if someone stepped out in the 1930's or 40's, yet it has all the modern conveniences of home. The farmhouse is completely furnished to accommodate groups, families, and couples.
The home has 5 bedrooms and sleeps up to 14 guests. Three of the bedrooms each have 2 double beds, one bedroom has 2 bunk beds (4 beds), and another bedroom has a single bed and a twin.

This trip was unbelievable. You will rent from Danny, a country gentleman who grew up in the house and currently lives up the road and runs the farm/ winery. It is a working farm that grows apples, grapes and peaches that they use in their wine. They also have beef cattle. Danny has a son (Shannon) who runs the farm and a grandson who works on the farm. You will also meet his wife Nancy. They were all friendly and delightful. The pet friendly house is over a hundred years old with bronze plaques on the rooms explaining who live there. The furnishing is from the 1940's. It has everything you need (full kitchen, clothes washer and dryer, even supplies). It has 5 bedrooms and has 6 queen beds, 4 bunk beds and a nursery with crib. Up the dirt road is the barn with pigs, rabbits, sheep, chickens, donkeys, lamas, goats and other animals. Eggs are plentiful for breakfast. Horses are often in the yard (you can feed them but not ride). There is a pond with great largemouth bass fishing and catfish (caught many using rubber worms)! There is plenty to do in 7 days there including D-day memorial, Poplar forrest, tubing/kayaking the james river. Hiking the peaks of otter and Appotomax courthouse. The only con is the amount of bugs, there were many as we didnt notice a window was open. (No mosquitoes and no ticks during our trip). If you are squeemish about bugs and spiders than this is not for you! This is a great visit for city slickers who need a rest or a family getaway. Children will absolutely love the dozens of bunnys and you may take them home if you like for free!
