Shady Grove is a beautiful getaway. The on-line pictures do not do it justice. From tiled floors, gorgeous wood doors and details, well-appointed kitchen w/high-end utensils and appliances, lovely views from the decks, and open floor plan, this place is great for a quiet retreat or family gatherings. Excellent location--off the beaten path but close to conveniences, tourist sites, and hiking/biking trails. We will definitely stay here again!

We stayed at Shady Grove during Sturgis Motorcycle Week 2007. We were utterly delighted with the place. Lots of light indoors, two decks outdoors, every electrical appliance you can think of in the kitchen. Plus a washer and a dryer. The owners were friendly, but not obtrusive; and they welcomed our dogs.
We felt so lucky that we got to stay at such a wonderful place. Did not notice any odor in the water. And we did not feel that doing a clean-up before we left the place was onerous. Whenever we hear of someone heading to South Dakota, we always recommend Shady Grove to them.

We have just returned from a wonderful stay at Shady Grove. The gravel road was easily traveled by our motorcycles and we did much traveling in the area. Centrally located to Sturgis, Deadwood, and other attractions, it was easy to get around. The kitchen had ample appliances/utensils and the grill was great to cook with. The location is beautiful, nestled in the hills with a pasture, babbling brook, and a unique yard. We even got to hear a bull elk snorting in the darkness just outside the cabin door. We didn't notice any problem with the water either, but it may be the difference between "city water" and "well water". Us having well water at home, we didn't notice anything different. The cleaning wasn't burdensome at all. With concerns that we may have been too noisy of tenants for the owners, they were very gracious hosts and helped make for a very relaxing stay. We enjoyed looking through the local memorabilia left for reading and especially enjoyed the surprise left for us. Thank you Carol and Lin for a great stay.

We just returned from our trip to the beautiful Black Hills. We enjoyed our stay at Shady Grove which was right in the hills and surrounded by pine trees. The cottage was very nice and very well equipped. Lin and Carol are great hosts who have the gift of making you feel welcome and comfortable. We were a little concerned about our privacy with the owners below but it wasn't a problem at all. We did get to enjoy a sing-a-long which was great fun but we didn't feel pressured to participate in any way.
We were concerned about a previous review concerning the cleaning being extensive but the expectations weren't unreasonable. We vacuumed, took the bedding off the beds, and cleaned the kitchen and bathrooms. We also wondered about the water smell, based on the previous review. There is a sulfer odor when the hot water is on but it wasn't that predominate of a smell and we didn't notice it when the cold and hot were on together.
We would recommend this rental to anyone.

Shady Grove is a great hub to base all your adventures in western South Dakota. Dead center in the middle of everything interesting, the property is excellent, the amenities first rate, and the hosts extremely awesome folks.
We loved the espresso machine every morning, and afternoon, etc, and being so close to everything yet a nice distance from tourists. The family and I will be back as soon as we can. A year later I still regard our time at Shady Grove as one of my most relaxing vacations ever.
Highly recommended! We tell our friends all the time to get out there and enjoy South Dakota from the comfort of Shady Grove.

The ten (yes 10!) of us had no complaints. The great rooms were absolutely perfect for keeping everyone together and entertained. If you're looking to "get away from it all" this is your place. You won't even THINK about trying to work while you're on vacation ! Next time (and there will be MANY next times) we're going to listen to Carol and book longer !

What a wonderful place for a family vacation! Shady Grove and Red Tail Hawk are gorgeous beyond our expectations. Our only regret is that we didn't stay long enough. Everything we needed or could have wanted was there and Carol and Lin are wonderful. We sure hope to come back for a longer stay.

Our extended family stayed in both parts of Shady Grove. What fabulous "cabins". They had everything we needed and more. It was a short and pretty drive to Mt. Rushmore from there. Everyone agreed it felt like home! Our experience with the owners was great!

STayed June 18 - 22 2008. Spectacular cabin with ample sleeping and large, pleasant living, kitchen area and two decks. Be prepared to do all the cleaining including polishing fixtures, scrub floors, polish furniture and appliances. Bring your own water as the water stinks to the point of making us gag (owner says water is pure with sulphur smell - AFTER we could not use it for the entire stay). Pure or not, it stinks.
