The Meadow House - A Sanctuary in Southern Oregon's Colestin Valley

Sleeping Accommodations: 2 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 8

Bedding Information: King Bed Double Bed, Twin/Single Bed, Child Bed

Get back to nature and back to yourself at this
Ashland vacation rental fondly called The Meadow
House, a serene and lovely vacation home in
beautiful Southern Oregon between Ashland, Oregon and Yreka, California. This vacation rental is situated on the edge of a meadow in a valley long held sacred by Native Americans and offers postcard perfect views of Mount Ashland and the Siskyous. At night, unhindered by artificial lights, the stars illuminate the night with the Milky Way, constellations, and meteor showers.

This home was lovingly designed and built by a
Buddhist nun, whose love for the land and attention
to detail makes it a truly special retreat. The house
comfortably sleeps six guests in its two bedrooms
and convertible sofas, though more are welcome to
curl up on the extra mattresses and futons.

Master Bedroom
The master bedroom is a tranquil retreat for the
heads of the house to retreat for some relaxation and privacy. A comfortable king sized bed is dressed with a simple white and floral quilt, while a gorgeous turquoise quilt hangs on the wall and adds some color. Bright windows offer views of the meadow and mountains beyond and join with the skylight to let in morning light. A writing desk provides an ideal place to record one’s thoughts. A full bathroom adjoins the master bedroom, as does a large walk-in closet that holds a child’s bed should your little one need to be quite close.

Second Bedroom
This bedroom is on the lower level of the house and
features wonderful light and views out of several
windows. This bedroom was furnished with kids and
teens in mind, and features a full sized bed, a twin
sized bed, a futon, and a trundle bed, making it the
perfect spot for a prolonged sleepover! This room has a private entrance as well as a TV.

Living Room
The living room is the heart of the home. It’s a bright,
airy room with wood floors, crisp white walls, and
expansive windows. An extensive library of books line
the walls, making this room truly feel like home. We
have books on everything from science to art to
health to personal growth; you are sure to find
something here to catch your interest as you curl up
in front of the wood burning fireplace. In addition to
books, we also have an extensive collection of LPs,
CDs, and DVDs. Put on a favorite record, or gather
everyone in the living room to watch a film. The living
room also has an upright piano and an extensive
selection of sheet music to satisfy everyone from
beginner to virtuoso.

Kitchen and Dining Area
The kitchen features beautiful custom wood cabinets
that provide a warm atmosphere for preparing meals.
Every appliance you could ever dream of needing is
provided, including toaster, toaster oven, microwave,
osterizer, mixer, food processor, juicer, ice maker,
and coffee maker! The biggies are all here, too,
including refrigerator, electric oven and range, and
dishwasher. Just adjacent to the kitchen is the dining area with a lovely wood table that seats four.

Outdoor Living Spaces
The entire home is surrounded by a beautiful wood
deck that offers panoramic views of the valley and
surrounding mountains. There is a screened in deck
also. It's great place for pets to be outside but you can still keep an eye on them.

The owner has a separate suite on the top floor over the garage with a separate entrance. The separate entrance through the garage gives guests complete privacy. Generally invisible to guests, the owner is readily available to answer questions. Rentals are for one set of guests at a time, so the house is all yours, even if you don't need the lower level family room.

We spent the week over New Year’s at The Meadow House. You should see it - this is a very special place. Actually, “magical” or “enchanted” are better words to describe this house and its surroundings. The silence and the serenity of the wide-open landscape, the spectacular views from panoramic windows and decks with any weather, the proximity to Mt. Ashland.
Whether you choose to retire reading in front of the wood stove, or to work your high-speed Internet connection, you’ll find what you need. All Ashland has to offer is only a short drive away.

Since we were here in winter, we experienced snow as well as rain – but every day in such environment was truly amazing. Low clouds, high clouds, the snow-white cone of Mt. Ashland greeting from over the hills in bright sunshine.

If you love nature, enjoy watching wild turkeys, occasional elk and more frequent deer, this is the place to visit. We will be back in spring to see the fresh green and the wildflowers in the meadows.

Our stay at the Meadow House was almost magical.
For Judy it was the perfect retreat at the end of a
busy, stressful day of classes. Nearly every night as
we sat down to dinner, the deer would come in to
graze. One night, we must have just missed seeing
the birth of a new fawn, as the mother was still
licking it off and it was wobbling around as it tried
to stand. Sunsets on the evenings with clouds were
spectacular! I’ll try to attach photos. On the day of
Judy’s final exam, as she was getting up and
tensely trying to cram a few more facts into her
brain, 3 elk and about 8 deer came walking through
the narrow part of the yard between the back of the
house and the creek. It provided a much needed
touch of serenity.

For me, it was a lovely place to spend my days,
alternately enjoying the natural beauty, my
computer addiction, philosophical reading and
listening to music, both my own and selections
from Rick’s eclectic collection. And then there were
adventures with the dogs! Our city dogs didn’t
quite know what to make of all the ground squirrels
and other wildlife at first. Though they never really
came close to catching anything, they certainly
enjoyed what they thought was a chase.

Toward the end of our stay, we were comfortably
joined in the house by Judy’s mom, two of our
adult kids and two of their friends. Everyone loved
the house and found whatever sort of adventures
they wanted somewhere in the area.

Finally, our thanks to Rick for being so
accommodating with our shipping needs, gift card
processing, and even dog sitting on several
occasions so we could go out together in the
evening. I truly do not know what more we could
have asked for. It was a very special stay and we
will remember it fondly.

We spent two weeks at the Meadow House this past summer. The house is basically circular in shape with large windows throughout. This design provides a panoramic view of the meadow and the forests beyond. It was fun to observe the deer, elk, wild turkeys, and lost cattle from the hillside on which the house was built. Activities (e.g., concerts and plays) in nearby Ashland and Jacksonville added spice to our vacation. Also, Rick, the landlord, was a friendly, informative fellow.

We have stayed here 4 times already and each time has been a pleasure. The location is heavenly: Very remote yet completely connected to the world through satellite TV and high speed Internet access. We spend lots of time relaxing on the deck while Clyde explores the large property. The Colistin valley is a truly peaceful and spiritual experience with quiet sunny days and restful nights under the stars of the visible Milky Way. The best of all worlds exists here with the culture and ammenities of Ashland a short very lovely drive away, through a mountian road. We have found our place and plan on returning repeatedly.
