We are so excited about sharing our "new" but very old home and its' stories with you and other potential guests.
Rock of Ages has been sitting on the shores of lake Erie since 1861. Built of native, local limestone it is listed on the National Historic Register. There simply is not another comparable home on lake Erie- it is wonderfully unique and fun to explore. It is very solid (like a "Rock") and in great shape, but we have renovated the first floor, opening it all up to panoramic views of the lake and have added a state-of-the-art kitchen and plenty of dining space for 30-plus guests.
Rock of Ages overlooks the lake Erie islands and is in the quaint village of Marblehead and is only a hop, skip, and a jump from the east gate of Lakeside (The Chautauqua of lake Erie) in one direction and the historic Marblehead lighthouse in the other. The lighthouse is a spot of natural beauty and the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the Great Lakes.
We have traveled around the world and this is our favorite place on earth! Friendly, downhome people, great entertainment(at Lakeside and the islands),wonderful local history, great boating,Cedar Point, and the waves and the winds of lake Erie are constantly there. What a place! From our tower room and rooftop patio is one of the best views of the lake Erie islands in the whole area. Come and see.
Rock of Ages has a 120-foot spacious patio overlooking the lake with plenty of furniture for sunbathing, eating, and gazing at the lake and watching the boats and ferry to Kelley's island. Of course, you can swim off the flat glacial rocks right in front of the house or if you prefer a sandy beach there is one right down the road. We still have the original limestone fossil walkways from when "The Rock" was first built. There is also a large hot tub overlooking the lake out front.
We have plenty of room for the whole family (7000+ square feet) and lots of bed and bath options. Where else can you find a vacation rental with EIGHT KING BEDROOMS??! There is a first floor suite with a king bed and its' own bath for those who do not do stairs. On the second floor each of the five bedrooms has a king-size bed and a private bath. The third floor is great for kids. Six bedrooms surround a large common area with a large screen TV. The third floor bedrooms share a fullsize bath and two half baths.
There is one king bedroom, two queen bed, 4 double beds, 3 twin beds and 4 rollaways. You have already heard about the views from the tower room! It has a king bed, its' own bath, and a roof-top patio. Folks will fight over who gets to sleep up there!
As well as the new kitchen and dining/great room on the first floor, there is a living room with a big-screen TV and computer with internet access. The first floor also has two half baths. The lower level ( the former summer kitchen in the "old days") is a large game room with a pool table, ping pong table, TV, half bath, and tables and chairs which opens out to the backyard patio with a large grill. Rock of Ages has a large parking area to accomodate big groups.
Although it is wonderful in the summer with the windows open and the lake breezes, we do have air conditioning. Rock of Ages can be used year round and the lake in all its' glory with ice and snow is something to behold! It is a great place for business or church groups or special interest retreats and seminars. Our rates are for the entire property, not per person as in an inn or bed and breakfast. Our kitchen can easily handle the needs of a catered event or a weekend getaway. We can put you in touch with a local catering company just around the corner from The Rock that has catered a number of groups at Rock of Ages. Some of you love to cook and come with your own family chefs, however we do know some of you would rather not think or deal much with preparing food while on vacation, so we like to let people know about this poss
