The House

Situated in the quiet village of St Michel le Cloucq, 5 kms from the old capital of Fontenay le Compte, 30 kms from Niort and 50 kms from La Rochelle and the beaches of the Atlantic.
The house is comfortably furnished with antique country furniture and has been restored in keeping with the original style with exposed stone walls and tiled and wood floors.
The ground floor has a large living room with a stone fireplace, television and video recorder, DVD player, hi-fi and telephone. In the living room is a canopied double bed, a table, comfortable chairs, sofa and a Louis-Philippe armoire and there is a bathroom with bath, washbasin and cupboards and a separate wc.
There is a second double bedroom with television and a private bathroom with shower.
The kitchen is equipped with a dishwasher and microwave, an oven and hob and various other things including a mixer, toaster and coffee maker. There is a separate laundry room with a washing machine and a fridge/freezer.
Upstairs is a double bedroom with a Louis-Philippe armoire and a mezzanine with two single beds. A cot, highchair and baby bath, can be provided on request. For quiet evenings, there are games and video cassettes.
The garden is private, surrounded by hedges and there is a sunny outside terrace with garden furniture and a stone barbecue, and private parking. We also have two adult bicycles and two children's bicycles available.
Travel to the Vendée is convenient, with road links to the Channel ports improved by new motorways in recent years. St Malo is only 3 hours away. In addition, the airport at La Rochelle (55 minutes) is served by two airlines from the UK (Ryanair and BE) and the larger airport a Nantes (1 hour) is part of the networks of both British Airways and Air France.

The Vendée apart from its beauty, is filled with history and fine architecture, notably the Abbaye de Maillezais and the Abbaye Royale in Nieul. Niort (30 kms), set on the River Sèvre, has a castle built by Henry Plantagenet and Richard the Lionheart and some lovely old houses around Rue St-Pierre, as well as an attractive art museum. The great sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast are about 50 kms away and you can easily get to the lovely islands of Oléron and Aix just off the coast.
